Disney shares sneak peek at new drone show

Disney Dreams That Soar (Disney)

Disney World is gearing up for the debut of a new drone show at Disney Springs later this month. The show, “Disney Dreams That Soar presented by AT&T,” will begin May 24 and run through Sept. 2—adding an extra, but limited-time, entertainment option at the shopping/dining complex.

On Wednesday, Disney decided to share a preview of what it has put together for this show by releasing video of testing sessions conducted in France. “Dreams That Soar” will use 800 drones to create Disney characters and scenes from films such as “Wall-E,” “Peter Pan,” “Dumbo,” “Big Hero 6” and “Star Wars.”

The footage shows Dumbo flying high in the sky, a larger-than-life-Peter Pan, and Baymax changing into his armored suit. Those figures will be accompanied by a score that includes Disney soundtracks and an original song composed specifically for the show. The video also included a preview of the song, which include lyrics about dreaming and becoming the hero:

You can be you and the hero, too

This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for

Just imagine where you go

With dreams that soar

This will be Disney Springs’ second drone show. The first was called “Starbright Holidays,” which debuted in 2016 for a short run. “Dreams That Soar” will be much bigger, with its 800 drones. For comparison, “Starbright Holiday” only used 300 drones. run during the holiday season, but it featured 300 drones. And Disneyland Paris, uses 500 drones for its “Disney Electrical Sky Parade” show.

“The amount of drones really allowed us to make figures bigger than life, bigger than anything I’ve ever seen,” said Tony Giordano, show director for Disney Live Entertainment. “The fact that we can have a Baymax figure and a Death Star that’s bigger than the castle…bigger than Spaceship Earth is incredible.”

Disney World won’t be the only place in Central Florida to see drones this summer. Universal Orlando will use 600 drones as part of “CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular,” a new lagoon show debuting at Universal Studios Florida on June 14. It will also feature music, fountains and fireworks.

As for “Dreams That Soar,” it will play twice nightly—9 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.—with viewing areas along the waterfront on the West Side of Disney Springs. Since the show is an outdoor offering, Disney cautions that showtimes could change based on the weather.
